Cash out on Polling Day?
As we approach Polling Day on the 4th July we can see how cash and ATM use has changed since the last two General Elections.
This year, LINK, the UK’s cash access and cash machine network expects around £235 million to be withdrawn from ATMs on Polling Day, compared to £322 million on 12th December 2019 and £356 million on 8th June 2017.
Graham Mott, Director of Strategy, LINK: “Polling Day traditionally itself doesn’t seem to make a huge difference to ATM use when compared to a normal Thursday at that time of year, people seem to fit voting around their normal routine.
“Early December is normally slightly busier than either early June or July but the vast majority of the fall in ATM use is down to people now using less cash overall and increasingly using cards and their phones to make day-to-day payments.
“Despite ATM transactions halving since Theresa May’s 2017 election LINK has made sure the overall coverage of the ATM network has remained stable, 99.8% of UK high streets still having free cash access within 1km. LINK will also make sure this is still the case by the time of the next General Election, whenever that is.”
